a+u’s July issue features Carmody Groarke, an architectural practice founded in 2006 by architects Kevin Carmody and Andy Groarke. Having studied in Canberra and Melbourne, Australia, and Sheffield, United Kingdom, respectively, the duo have carved out a unique trajectory of openness, experimentation, and social responsibility from their London studio. The work of Carmody Groarke is constantly inspired by improvisation. From their early days when projects were primarily short-lived and small-scale like art pavilions and exhibition designs, to today, when long-lasting and large-scale projects often require working in phases, their designs seek to create conscious architecture of durability and permanence. Focusing on the sense of timeliness and fragility of architecture, this issue presents 21 projects arranged in order of their life span – transient to permanent. From a 3-day pavilion, Skywalk, that celebrates street life, to the 7 July Memorial, which represents everlasting remembrance, Carmody Groarke faces the uncertainty of time with a conviction that “everything they design today will almost certainly be subject to inevitable change and necessary transformation tomorrow” – to create resilience in architecture.
